BFAR Declares Lianga Bay in Surigao del Sur Free from Paralytic Shellfish Poison

Quezon City, Philippines – November 5, 2024

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) has announced that Lianga Bay in Surigao del Sur is now free from paralytic shellfish poison (PSP), commonly associated with red tide. This comes after three consecutive weeks of monitoring in collaboration with the Local Government Unit (LGU), during which shellfish samples consistently tested negative for the PSP toxin.

This clearance means that shellfish harvested from Lianga Bay are safe for consumption, allowing the public to resume gathering, harvesting, and marketing shellfish from the area. The BFAR’s monitoring efforts have been vital in ensuring that the fishery industry and public health are protected from harmful algal blooms.

The BFAR and local authorities continue their close monitoring of Lianga Bay, aiming to keep the waters safe for fishery activities and to support the livelihood of those reliant on the bay’s marine resources.
