Mati City, Davao Oriental—What began as a routine fishing trip for Leon Morales turned into an extraordinary story of survival, resilience, and hope.
The 37-year-old fisherman from Baganga was reunited with his family on November 20, 2024, after surviving a two-day ordeal at sea. Morales swam an estimated 10 miles to safety, driven by sheer determination to see his loved ones again.
The incident unfolded on the evening of November 19, when the motor of Morales’ pump boat malfunctioned. Stranded and adrift under the vast night sky, he spent hours grappling with the harsh reality of being at the mercy of the sea. As dawn broke, a simple mishap compounded his troubles—while attempting to retrieve his paddle, he lost his boat, which drifted beyond his reach.
Faced with no other option, Morales relied on his instincts and endurance. Spotting faint lights from a beach resort in Barangay Lanca, Mati City, he made the decision to swim. For hours, he battled exhaustion, hunger, and the daunting waves, covering approximately 10 miles before reaching the shore around 11:00 PM.
Upon arrival, Morales sought help from the local barangay officials, who quickly provided him with food and first aid while notifying the authorities. Earlier that day, his pump boat had washed ashore in Purok 3, Barangay Lanca, sparking efforts by the Mati City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) to locate its owner.
For Morales’ family, the news of his survival was nothing short of a miracle. They traveled from Baganga to Mati City, where they were overwhelmed with relief and gratitude upon reuniting with him.
“We are deeply thankful to everyone who helped ensure Leon’s safety. His survival is a testament to his strength and the kindness of those who supported him,” a family member said.
The Mati CDRRMO commended Morales’ bravery and the swift actions of Barangay Lanca officials. “This incident showcases the resilience of the human spirit and the power of community support,” said Charlemagne Bagasol of the CDRRMO.
The Mati City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) provided relief assistance to help Morales and his family recover. Meanwhile, Barangay officials and rescuers expressed pride in their coordinated response that contributed to his safe return.
Now back in Baganga, Morales carries with him an inspiring story of survival against all odds. His journey is a reminder of the strength of the human will and the unwavering hope that can carry a person through the darkest hours.
