Surrender of Abu Sayyaf Member Signals Progress in Peace Efforts

Jolo, Sulu – October 16, 2024 – The Tactical Operations Wing Western Mindanao (TOW WestMin), led by BGEN Rocky J. Binag, has announced a significant development in the ongoing efforts to combat terrorism in the region. Through the Tactical Operations Group Sulu – Tawi-Tawi (TOG SulTaw), TOW WestMin facilitated the surrender of a member of the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) at its headquarters in Bus-Bus, Jolo.

This successful operation is attributed to the collaborative efforts of multiple military and law enforcement units, including the TOG SulTaw, FS-WestMin, the 3012AISS of the 300th Air Intelligence and Security Wing (AISW), and various components of the Philippine Air Force, including the 723rd Special Operations Squadron. Additional support came from the 41st Infantry Battalion, the 11th Military Intelligence Battalion (MIB), and various intelligence and police units from the provincial and regional levels.

The surrendered ASG member, who is not on the government’s watchlist, was reportedly recruited by ASG leader Mujib Susukan in 1999. He later operated under the late ASG sub-leader Idang Susukan and was involved in numerous armed encounters with government forces from 2006 to 2017 in the Talipao area of Sulu. After years of evading capture amid intensified military operations by Joint Task Force Sulu, now known as Joint Task Force Orion, he chose to surrender in hopes of reintegrating into society.

The surrender reflects the Philippine government’s ongoing commitment to fostering peace and security in the region, providing pathways for individuals seeking to abandon a life of violence and criminality. It emphasizes the effectiveness of sustained military operations and community engagement in addressing the threats posed by insurgent groups like the Abu Sayyaf.

As peace initiatives continue, authorities hope this development encourages more members of the ASG to surrender and pursue a more stable and productive life, contributing to the overall security and stability of the region.
