Governor Jim Salliman Welcomes Reduced Ferry Rates on Basilan-Zamboanga Route

Zamboanga City, October 28, 2024 — In a move that promises enhanced affordability and accessibility for travelers, Governor Jim Salliman expressed appreciation for the recent reduction in ferry rates on the Zamboanga City-Isabela de Basilan route, citing it as a significant win for the people of Basilan. The rate cut, initiated by the entry of FastCat into the sea transport services, has already led to similar reductions by Aleson Shipping Lines. The Provincial Government views this development as a major milestone in promoting affordable transportation for Basileños, especially as the holiday season approaches.

FastCat’s recent launch of reduced fare rates aims to benefit thousands of residents and visitors who rely on this route for essential travel and economic activities. Governor Salliman expressed optimism that other ferry operators, such as Montenegro and Weesam, would also join the effort to lower fares, creating more options for travelers and enhancing the quality of maritime services between Basilan and Zamboanga.

“This reduction in rates is timely as it eases the financial burden on travelers during the holiday season,” Salliman noted, adding that the lower costs are expected to positively impact the local economy. With the influx of ferry operators and the competitive atmosphere it creates, the Governor anticipates an improvement in both the affordability and quality of services offered, aligning with his administration’s policy of “Redefining Basilan.”

In addition to providing economic relief, Salliman sees this competitive development as an essential step towards fostering a resilient and growing economy in Basilan. The improved services resulting from this healthy competition, he believes, will attract more visitors and contribute to Basilan’s ongoing efforts to bolster its tourism and commerce sectors.

As ferry operators respond to this shift, the Provincial Government remains committed to supporting initiatives that improve the lives of its constituents and create an enabling environment for Basilan’s progress and prosperity.
