Flooding Devastates Maguindanao as Typhoon Kristine Hits

Maguindanao, October 23, 2024 – Severe flooding caused by Typhoon Kristine has wreaked havoc across several areas in Maguindanao, submerging farms, blocking roads, and displacing residents. The heavy rains, which began early this week, continue to cause damage to both agricultural lands and infrastructure in the province.

In Barangay Boliok, particularly in Sitios Abaga, Amadeo, and Kulempang, residents are struggling with knee-deep floodwaters that have rendered roads impassable. Local farmers are lamenting the destruction of crops, including vegetables and rice paddies, which serve as their main source of livelihood. The community fears further damage as more rain is expected in the coming days.

In Talayan, Maguindanao del Sur, the national highway in Barangay Tambunan-I was submerged, making it difficult for motorists to pass through. Local police were seen assisting stranded vehicles, while the Talayan LGU declared a suspension of classes on Wednesday morning, October 23, 2024, to ensure the safety of students and teachers.

Further south, in Barangay Itaw, South Upi, over a hectare of rice fields was flooded, leaving farmers devastated. The continuous downpour, attributed to Typhoon Kristine, submerged their crops, prompting urgent calls for assistance from local authorities. “Our livelihoods have been destroyed. We need help to recover from this disaster,” said one local farmer, who requested immediate aid for the affected agricultural sector.

In Sitio Tinago, Barangay Limbo, Sultan Kudarat, residents were evacuated as floodwaters rose rapidly, posing serious threats to lives and property. Local authorities, along with the police, coordinated evacuation efforts to ensure the safety of families. The relentless rain has caused many low-lying areas to become unsafe, and more evacuations may be necessary if the weather worsens.

The continuous rains and rising floodwaters across Maguindanao have disrupted daily life, and authorities are urging residents to stay alert and follow safety protocols. Local government units and rescue teams remain on high alert, monitoring the situation closely to prevent further damage and ensure the safety of affected communities.
