Clash Between Military and Armed Group in North Cotabato Leaves 3 Injured; High-Powered Firearms Seized

CAMP SIONGCO, Awang, Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao del Norte – A military operation prevented a planned violent attack by an armed group in North Cotabato, resulting in a clash between government forces and the group. The encounter occurred in Barangay Bagolibas, Aleosan, North Cotabato, around 4:00 PM on October 24, 2024.

According to Lt. Col. Edgardo B. Batinay, commander of the 34th Infantry (Reliable) Battalion, they received intelligence about a group of armed men traveling in two multicabs, a pick-up truck, and three motorcycles. The group, allegedly led by individuals known as Montasser and Nasser, was heading toward Sitio Tubak, Barangay Pagangan.

Upon receiving the report, the 34IB troops launched a military operation, resulting in a firefight that lasted over an hour. The encounter left three members of the armed group wounded, while one soldier sustained injuries from the government side.

The military apprehended 21 individuals believed to be part of the lawless elements and seized seven high-powered firearms, including five M16 rifles and two M14 rifles. They also recovered a grenade, seven bandoliers, ammunition, magazines, and the vehicles used by the suspects.

Major General Antonio G. Nafarrete, Commander of the 6th Infantry (Kampilan) Division and Joint Task Force Central, commended the bravery of the soldiers, especially Cpl. Roy Villaber, who was injured during the clash and is now in stable condition. He also thanked the residents for their timely information regarding the presence of the armed group.

“The heroism of Cpl. Villaber and his comrades is a testament to the unparalleled service of our soldiers. Their willingness to sacrifice their lives proves their dedication to defending our country against elements that seek to sow chaos. We will continue to fight for the peace and security of our communities despite threats to tranquility,” Major General Nafarrete said.

The operation is part of the military’s ongoing efforts to maintain peace and order in conflict-prone areas of Mindanao.
