Lamitan City, Basilan – A resident of Lamitan City, known for his role in securing the surrender of Abu Sayyaf members, was shot and killed on Thursday, September 26. Suadi Wakil Jahwan, who had helped the police and military facilitate the surrender of over 10 Abu Sayyaf militants in recent years, was gunned down in a brazen daylight attack.
The incident occurred at the Oval Public Market in Barangay Matibay, Lamitan City, where Jahwan was seated in the front seat of a van. Gunmen armed with .45 caliber pistols approached and opened fire at close range, killing him instantly. The assailants quickly fled the scene on motorcycles, according to the Lamitan City Police.
Jahwan, a resident of Barangay Tumahubong in Sumisip, Basilan, had been instrumental in helping authorities convince members of the notorious Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) to surrender. His efforts, alongside the police, military, and local officials, contributed to the peaceful surrender of over 10 militants over the past three years.
Family members and friends suspect that Jahwan’s death may be linked to his involvement in these operations. They believe his role in facilitating the surrender of Abu Sayyaf members may have made him a target for retaliation.
In recent months, all towns in Basilan, including its two cities—Lamitan and Isabela—were declared “Abu Sayyaf-free” following a sustained campaign of surrenders. Since 2016, more than 400 members of the ASG have surrendered through the coordinated efforts of provincial officials, traditional Yakan, Tausug, and Sama leaders, and the league of mayors in the island province.
Authorities are currently investigating Jahwan’s murder. Brig. Gen. Alvin V. Luzon, commander of the 101st Infantry Brigade, expressed concern over the killing, emphasizing the need to ensure the safety of individuals who have contributed to peace efforts in the region.
As the police continue their investigation, Basilan residents and local leaders have reiterated the importance of protecting those who work towards maintaining peace and stability in the province, which has seen significant progress in reducing the influence of militant groups like Abu Sayyaf.
