ASU Partners with PNP and Task Force Davao for Clearing Operations at Bankerohan Market Amid Vendor Threats

Davao City – September 19, 2024

The Ancillary Services Unit (ASU) has strengthened its partnership with the Philippine National Police (PNP) and Task Force Davao (TF-Davao) to ensure the safety and success of its special clearing operations at the Bankerohan Public Market. This move follows increasing threats from vendors who have resisted the unit’s efforts to clear the market’s entrances and thoroughfares.

Paul Bermejo, head of the ASU, revealed during a media interview at the City Health Office (CHO) building that the decision to enlist police assistance was made after a previous operation turned tense. Vendors, resisting the clearing operations, had resorted to carrying large rocks, posing a serious danger to ASU personnel.

“Our team was threatened because the vendors were carrying huge rocks. That’s why we installed a protective screen on one of our vehicles, so that if rocks were thrown, they wouldn’t hit us directly,” Bermejo explained.

Tensions have been escalating since July 2024, particularly in key areas along Posadas Street, Marfori, Datu Bago, Ilustre Extension, Barangay 2-A, and Rasay. Vendors have been resisting the operations, concerned about the impact on their livelihoods. However, after ASU sought assistance from PNP and TF-Davao, compliance from the vendors increased, leading to adjustments in their stall setups and easing the tension.

Despite understanding the vendors’ struggles, Bermejo emphasized the need for order in the market. He acknowledged that the vendors depend on their sales for survival but stressed that they must not obstruct vehicles and essential market operations.

“The vendors have livelihoods at stake, but we must also ensure public safety and keep the market accessible for everyone,” Bermejo said.

With the support of the PNP and TF-Davao, the ASU hopes to carry out future operations smoothly and maintain the peace while enforcing regulations. Bermejo expressed optimism that continued collaboration between authorities and vendors will lead to a more orderly and compliant environment at the market, ensuring that both the vendors’ needs and public safety are prioritized.
