In the heart of Basilan, the municipality of Tabuan-Lasa has long been a community striving for harmony amidst challenges. Last year, the island of Bubuan became the focal point of an armed confrontation between local groups over essential natural resources such as potable water, forests, and fisheries. While the intervention of the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Tabuan-Lasa and the 4th Special Forces Battalion successfully brokered peace, resolving the underlying conflict required more than just formal agreements.
Family feuds, or rido, are complex and deeply rooted in history, pride, and survival. When left unaddressed, these conflicts have the potential to resurface, often escalating beyond control. Recognizing this, the 15th Special Forces Company collaborated with multiple stakeholders to initiate sustainable solutions, ensuring that peace efforts go beyond temporary settlements.
A crucial step in this journey towards reconciliation was addressing the core issue of resource scarcity—particularly access to clean drinking water. Waves For Water Philippines, in partnership with Podium Designs, took a significant initiative to provide water filtration kits to affected groups. This effort, spearheaded by Jose Martin Chavez, aimed to alleviate the struggles of communities that previously faced challenges in obtaining safe drinking water. Though seemingly a small intervention, its impact was profound, addressing one of the key causes of dispute.
The success of this project was made possible through the dedication of various individuals and organizations. Noellene Banez, the Communication and Partnerships Officer of Waves For Water Philippines, played a pivotal role in mobilizing support alongside her colleagues Lianne Cabigas and Diane Calderon. Additionally, Ronel Kirby Tingzon and members of the Philippines General Council of the Assemblies of God (PGCAG) actively participated in facilitating the turnover of the water filtration kits.
Through these collective efforts, the community of Bubuan is beginning to mend the divisions that once set them apart. The provision of clean water is not just a basic necessity—it is a symbol of unity, a step toward healing, and a demonstration of how collaboration can bridge the gaps created by conflict. More than just resolving disputes, initiatives like these foster lasting peace by addressing the fundamental needs of the people.
While challenges remain, the groundwork laid by various stakeholders in Tabuan-Lasa provides a hopeful path forward. By continuing to build on these foundations, the community stands a greater chance of ensuring that peace is not just a fleeting moment but a sustained reality for generations to come.
