Authorities suspect the child was a victim of rape, and a thorough investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
A Community in Mourning
Initial reports reveal that the child was under the care of her aunt while her mother had recently left to work abroad and her father, a backhoe driver, was stationed in General Santos City. The victim, along with her 2-year-old sibling, was entrusted to their aunt, who works as a vendor at the OVAL market.
Witness accounts state that the child was last seen playing near her aunt’s stall as the latter prepared to close for the day. During this brief moment, the child reportedly went missing and was later discovered dead in a nearby area. The heinous crime has sparked outrage among residents, with many calling for heightened vigilance and stronger measures to ensure child safety.
Suspect’s Death Sparks Questions
In a shocking turn of events, Marlon Pantonial, 30, a person of interest in the case, allegedly took his own life while in police custody on January 12. According to City Police Officer-in-Charge P/Lt. Col. Bryan M. Panganiban, Pantonial voluntarily surrendered to authorities after being identified by the Valencia City Task Force as a suspect.
However, during the investigation, Pantonial reportedly managed to seize the crime investigator’s service firearm, despite being handcuffed, and shot himself in the neck. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. The incident occurred at the PNP Valencia headquarters, raising questions about the handling of the suspect and the security measures in place.
Calls for Justice and Safety
The child’s body was discovered in a sugarcane field in Purok-15, Bagontaas, on the morning of January 11, hours after she was reported missing. The brutal nature of the crime has left the community shaken, prompting local leaders and residents to demand swift justice for the victim and her family.
