LIBONA, Bukidnon — A 19-year-old man from Cagayan de Oro City died after he was struck by lightning while camping with his 18-year-old girlfriend at a mountain campsite in Barangay Kiliog, Libona, Bukidnon, on Friday afternoon, October 30, 2026.

The victim was identified as John Nashville Gonzales.

According to the initial investigation of the Libona Municipal Police Station, the incident occurred at around 1:39 p.m. while Gonzales and his companion were at the reception shelter area of Cowboys Camp in Mount Kilagas.

Authorities said Gonzales was struck by lightning during the incident, causing him to collapse and lose consciousness. Rescue personnel immediately responded and attempted to bring him to a hospital in Cagayan de Oro City for emergency medical treatment.

However, despite the efforts to save him, Gonzales was declared dead on arrival by attending medical personnel at JR Borja General Hospital at around 5:55 p.m.

The incident underscores the dangers posed by thunderstorms and lightning, particularly to people staying in exposed or mountainous areas. Mountain campsites and outdoor recreational areas can become especially hazardous when thunderstorms suddenly develop, prompting authorities to remind visitors to remain alert to changing weather conditions and seek appropriate shelter when lightning activity is present.

Police authorities are continuing their investigation and documentation of the incident.

Gonzales’ remains are currently at JM Funeral Homes.
