SURIGAO CITY — Cooperation from private citizens helped authorities recover and secure a suspected marijuana brick weighing approximately one kilogram, with an estimated standard drug value of ₱120,000, during a turnover operation in Barangay Rizal, Surigao City, on October 28, 2026.

The suspected illegal substance was formally turned over to the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) and its partner law enforcement units at approximately 4:22 p.m., following the initiative and cooperation of private individuals who assisted authorities in addressing the illegal drug problem.

Authorities described the incident as an example of how public participation and community cooperation can strengthen anti-drug enforcement efforts, particularly through the responsible sharing of information and coordination with government agencies.

The identities of the individuals who facilitated the turnover were withheld to protect their privacy and security, as well as to encourage other members of the public to cooperate with law enforcement authorities without fear of unnecessary exposure.

The coordinated effort involved the PDEA Regional Office XIII–Surigao del Norte Provincial Office, the Surigao del Norte Provincial Intelligence Unit/Drug Enforcement Unit, the Surigao City Police Station, and the Surigao City Seaport Interdiction Unit.

No suspect was identified or arrested in connection with the incident. Authorities have yet to establish the origin, ownership, or intended recipient of the recovered substance based on the information provided.

The suspected marijuana brick will undergo the necessary examination, documentation, and other procedures to establish its identity and ensure proper handling in accordance with existing protocols.

The incident highlights the importance of building public trust in law enforcement institutions, recognizing that efforts to address illegal drugs cannot rely solely on police operations and government enforcement initiatives. The willingness of ordinary citizens to report information and cooperate with authorities can also contribute significantly to the detection and prevention of illegal drug activities.

PDEA and its partner agencies reiterated their call for responsible public cooperation, emphasizing the importance of collective action in protecting communities from the harmful effects of illegal drugs.

Authorities continue to encourage residents across Surigao del Norte and the Caraga Region to work with law enforcement agencies in promoting safer, healthier, and drug-free communities.
