MALITA, Davao Occidental — A Philippine Coast Guard emergency response team assisted a pregnant woman who gave birth while aboard a motorized boat traveling through the coastal waters near Barangay Poblacion, Malita, Davao Occidental, on the evening of October 8, 2026.

The Coast Guard District Southeastern Mindanao (CGDSEM), through Coast Guard Station Davao Occidental and Coast Guard Sub-Station (CGSS) Malita, promptly responded after the family sought assistance upon reaching the shoreline with the mother and her newborn baby.

According to the Coast Guard, the woman departed Sitio Puting Bato in Barangay Lacaron, Malita, at approximately 7 p.m., accompanied by her husband and other companions. They were traveling by motorized boat toward Barangay Poblacion when she went into active labor and delivered her baby while still aboard the vessel.

The unexpected delivery turned the family’s journey into a medical emergency at sea, requiring immediate assistance to ensure the safety and well-being of both the mother and the newborn.

Upon reaching the shoreline at approximately 9 p.m., the family immediately sought help from personnel of CGSS Malita. Coast Guard personnel promptly provided emergency assistance and arranged the safe transport of the mother and her newborn to the Malita Women’s and Children’s Wellness Hospital for medical attention.

At approximately 9:10 p.m., the mother and baby were successfully turned over to the hospital’s attending medical personnel for proper medical evaluation and further care.

The prompt response ensured that the mother and her newborn were brought to a medical facility shortly after the family reached the shore. However, no further information was provided regarding their medical condition following their hospital admission.

The CGDSEM said the incident highlights the Philippine Coast Guard’s commitment to protecting lives, providing immediate assistance during emergencies, and safeguarding the welfare of coastal communities, particularly when medical emergencies occur at sea.

The response also underscores the importance of accessible emergency assistance for residents who depend on motorized boats for transportation between coastal communities.

For the family, what began as a boat journey from Barangay Lacaron to Barangay Poblacion became an unexpected childbirth emergency. The timely assistance of Coast Guard personnel helped bring the mother and her newborn safely to the hospital for the medical attention they needed.
