BONGAO, Tawi-Tawi — Three individuals, including a boat skipper and two passengers, were rescued on October 9, 2026, after their white outboard motorized banca sank near the sandbar off Pasiagan, Bongao, Tawi-Tawi, prompting a coordinated search and rescue operation involving police maritime personnel and other emergency responders.

The 1st Special Operations Unit of the Philippine National Police Maritime Group (1st SOU-MG) received a report from a concerned citizen at around 9 a.m. regarding a motorized banca that had sunk with three people aboard. Responding personnel immediately coordinated with partner agencies and proceeded to the reported location to assist the individuals in distress.
The rescue operation was led by PLT Khalid A. Macasasa under the supervision of PLTCOL Jeseryl A. Dela Cruz, commander of the 1st SOU. Initial investigation indicated that the banca developed a hole in its hull, allowing water to enter until the vessel eventually sank, leaving its occupants stranded at sea.
At approximately 9:20 a.m., the passenger vessel SEAJET spotted the three individuals and immediately took them aboard to ensure their safety. Responding personnel subsequently received the rescued individuals and provided them with initial medical assistance.
The operation involved the 1st SOU-MG, Tawi-Tawi Maritime Police Station (MARPSTA), Provincial Mobile Force Company–Tawi-Tawi, Philippine Coast Guard–Central Tawi-Tawi, and the Provincial Local Government Unit of Tawi-Tawi. Their coordinated response facilitated the safe transfer of the rescued individuals to the appropriate authorities for further assistance.
Following the initial intervention, the three survivors were formally turned over to the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) at White Port in Barangay Simandagit, Bongao. They were brought under the office’s care for further assessment, continued monitoring, and any additional assistance they might need.
Authorities highlighted the importance of prompt reporting, effective inter-agency coordination, and cooperation among maritime stakeholders in responding to emergencies at sea. The early report from a concerned citizen and the assistance provided by the passing passenger vessel helped facilitate the rescue of the three individuals.
In a safety reminder following the incident, the 1st SOU-MG urged boat operators, passengers, and other members of the maritime community to inspect their vessels and ensure they are seaworthy before departure. They were also reminded to carry appropriate safety equipment and immediately report maritime emergencies to the authorities.
The incident underscores the risks associated with traveling on vessels with damaged hulls and the importance of preventive inspections, proper safety preparations, and rapid emergency response to protect lives at sea.
The 1st Special Operations Unit–PNP Maritime Group reiterated its operational commitment under its motto: “By Land and Sea, We Overcome.”
