CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — A 36-year-old nurse is facing a parricide complaint after his wife, a 28-year-old radiologic technologist, was killed in a road collision that police are investigating as a possible intentional act following a reported argument between the couple.
The incident occurred at around 5:30 a.m. on Thursday, September 3, 2026, along R.N. Pelaez Boulevard in Barangay Kauswagan, Cagayan de Oro City.
The fatality was identified as Ivy Berjame Tingson, 28, a pedestrian and Radiologic Technologist I of Northeastern Misamis General Hospital (NMGH).
Also seriously injured was Jeric Cantago, 33, an online motorcycle rider who was reportedly carrying Tingson when the collision occurred. Cantago remains in critical condition at the Northern Mindanao Medical Center (NMMC), according to his family.
Police: Car veered toward roadside
According to the initial police investigation, Cantago was traveling on his Honda XRM motorcycle while a grayish-blue Toyota Vios, allegedly driven by Tingson’s husband, identified as Paul Christian Roque, 36, was traveling in the opposite direction.
Police said the Toyota Vios suddenly moved toward the side of the road where Tingson was located.
The vehicle allegedly struck Tingson before also colliding with Cantago’s motorcycle.
The impact did not end there.
The Toyota Vios continued moving and subsequently crashed into a fruit stand and a parked Hyundai Eon before finally coming to a stop.
The collision left both Tingson and Cantago with severe injuries.
Responding personnel from Oro Rescue rushed the two victims to a hospital. Tingson, however, later succumbed to her injuries.
Husband allegedly left the scene
Police said Roque allegedly fled the area after the collision and proceeded to his residence.
Authorities launched a follow-up operation and later located Roque, who reportedly surrendered himself to police personnel of Police Station 4-Carmen.
He was subsequently detained at the Maharlika Detention Cell, while the Toyota Vios and other vehicles involved in the crash were placed under the custody of the Traffic Enforcement Unit (TEU) for further examination.
Police are investigating the incident for possible criminal liability arising from Tingson’s death, Cantago’s injuries and the damage caused to the vehicles and roadside property.
Parricide complaint filed
Authorities have since filed a parricide complaint against Roque in connection with his wife’s death.
Police investigators are looking into circumstances surrounding the collision, including the events that preceded it and whether the vehicle was deliberately directed toward Tingson and the motorcycle she was riding.
Initial information gathered by police indicated that the couple had an argument before Tingson left the area and booked an online motorcycle ride.
Police are also investigating the reported claim that Roque believed his wife was involved with another man. Authorities have not publicly established that such a belief was the motive for the incident.
The exact circumstances and motive remain under investigation.
Family raises concerns over alleged abuse and marital conflict
Members of Tingson’s family told the news team that she and Roque had allegedly been experiencing serious problems in their relationship for some time.
The family also expressed their belief that the collision may have been intentional.
These claims, however, remain allegations and are among the matters that investigators must establish through evidence and witness accounts.
Other information circulating following the incident, including allegations concerning Roque’s purported use of illegal drugs, a previous rehabilitation stint and employment-related issues, has yet to be independently established by authorities and remains subject to police investigation.
Police have likewise yet to publicly confirm whether any substance use was involved at the time of the collision.
Victim remembered as dedicated healthcare worker
Tingson’s death has drawn an outpouring of grief from relatives, friends and fellow healthcare workers.
Northeastern Misamis General Hospital issued a statement mourning her death and described her as a dedicated and compassionate member of its healthcare team.
The hospital identified Tingson as a Radiologic Technologist I and said her commitment to patients and her colleagues would remain part of her legacy.
Her remains were reportedly brought to Butuan, where her family is expected to make arrangements for her wake and burial.
Friends and relatives have also posted messages seeking justice for Tingson.
One close friend wrote about the pain of losing her and expressed regret that those around her may not have known the extent of what she was allegedly experiencing.
The posts have contributed to calls for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.
Motorcycle rider remains in critical condition
Meanwhile, Cantago’s family is appealing for financial assistance as he remains confined in the intensive care unit of NMMC.
According to his relatives, Cantago was merely working as an online motorcycle rider when he became involved in the collision.
His family said he sustained severe injuries, including extensive damage to one of his legs, and that doctors were monitoring his condition before proceeding with surgery.
They said his family has been pooling their resources to cover his medical expenses but is struggling to meet the growing costs of his hospitalization.
The family has appealed to the public for prayers and financial assistance while Cantago remains in critical condition.
Investigation continues
The case has raised questions not only about the circumstances of Tingson’s death but also about the events leading up to the collision.
Investigators are expected to examine the vehicles involved, physical evidence at the crash site, witness accounts and other available evidence to determine exactly how the Toyota Vios moved toward the victims and whether the collision was deliberate.
Authorities will also determine the appropriate charges arising from the death of Tingson, the serious injuries sustained by Cantago and the property damage caused during the incident.
For now, Roque remains in police custody as the investigation and legal proceedings continue.
The filing of a parricide complaint does not by itself establish guilt. Roque remains entitled to due process, and the allegations against him will ultimately be determined through the proper legal proceedings.
