DATU SAUDI AMPUATAN, MAGUINDANAO DEL SUR — A man was shot and killed by an unidentified gunman in the inner portion of Barangay Dapiawan, Datu Saudi Ampatuan, Maguindanao del Sur, at around 8:05 p.m. Friday.
Police identified the victim as Norhan, an adult, married, and a resident of Barangay Dugengan in the neighboring municipality of Shariff Saidona Mustapha, Maguindanao del Sur.
According to the initial report from Datu Saudi Ampatuan Municipal Police Station (DSA MPS) Acting Chief of Police PMaj. Amil Andungan, the victim was reportedly out to buy something when the unidentified assailant suddenly approached him.
Without warning, the gunman fired at Norhan, striking him in the head.
The victim sustained a fatal gunshot wound and died following the attack.
After the shooting, the suspect immediately fled toward the direction of Datu Salibo, according to the initial police account.
Responding authorities recovered one spent cartridge case from the crime scene, which could form part of the physical evidence being examined as investigators work to establish the circumstances surrounding the killing.
Suspect and Motive Still Unknown
As of the initial police report, the identity of the gunman remains unknown.
Police have also yet to establish the motive behind the shooting. Investigators are conducting follow-up operations and gathering information that could lead to the identification and arrest of the suspect.
Authorities are expected to examine possible witnesses and other available evidence in the area as the investigation progresses.
The DSA MPS continues to handle the case and is working to determine what led to the attack and whether the victim may have been specifically targeted.
Shooting Raises Concern Amid Gun Ban
The killing also occurred despite the ongoing implementation of the gun ban in the region, putting renewed attention on the continued presence and use of firearms in violent incidents.
The gun ban is intended to restrict the carrying and use of firearms during the covered period as part of security measures designed to prevent armed violence and maintain peace and order.
However, authorities have not yet established whether the firearm used in the Datu Saudi Ampatuan shooting was legally registered, illegally possessed, or otherwise in violation of the gun ban. That determination will form part of the continuing investigation.
The shooting nevertheless highlights the challenge faced by law enforcement agencies in preventing armed attacks even while heightened firearm restrictions are in effect.
Police have yet to announce any arrest in connection with the incident.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to identify the suspect, establish the motive, and determine the circumstances that led to the fatal shooting.
