LUTAYAN, SULTAN KUDARAT — Three individuals were arrested after allegedly attempting to evade a police and military checkpoint, leading authorities to discover hundreds of reams of cigarettes that were later confirmed by the Bureau of Customs (BOC) to be smuggled.
The operation took place at around 3:05 p.m. on August 27, 2026, when joint personnel of the Lutayan Municipal Police Station (MPS) and the 22nd Mechanized Company established a checkpoint in Lutayan, Sultan Kudarat.
According to the authorities, personnel flagged down a Toyota Innova during the checkpoint operation. Instead of stopping, however, the vehicle allegedly accelerated and sped away from the checkpoint.
The incident immediately prompted authorities to launch a pursuit operation, which resulted in the apprehension of the three occupants of the vehicle.
600 Reams of Cigarettes Recovered
A subsequent inspection of the Toyota Innova led to the discovery of 600 reams of Fort Menthol 100’s cigarettes, with an estimated market value of ₱513,408.
The recovered cigarette shipment was subsequently confirmed by the Bureau of Customs as smuggled, strengthening the authorities’ case against the three arrested individuals.
Aside from the cigarettes, authorities also confiscated the Toyota Innova believed to have been used to transport the illicit shipment.
Four assorted cellular phones and one Baofeng handheld radio were likewise recovered during the operation.
Authorities said the seized evidence was properly marked and inventoried in the presence of a barangay official to document and preserve the integrity of the items recovered during the operation.
Suspects Under Police Custody
The three arrested individuals were informed of their constitutional rights following their apprehension.
They are currently under the custody of the Lutayan MPS pending proper disposition and the filing of appropriate charges based on the results of the investigation.
The authorities have not disclosed further details about the identities of the suspects or the intended destination of the cigarette shipment.
The operation underscores the continuing efforts of law enforcement agencies to intercept the movement of illegally traded goods through road networks in Sultan Kudarat.
The successful interception also highlights the importance of checkpoint operations and coordinated police-military enforcement, particularly along routes potentially being used to transport smuggled commodities.
Authorities Intensify Anti-Smuggling Drive
Lutayan MPS said it remains committed to its campaign against illegal trade and other unlawful activities, with authorities emphasizing the need for sustained enforcement and cooperation from the public.
The interception of the cigarette shipment is another reminder of the challenges faced by authorities in monitoring the movement of untaxed and illegally imported tobacco products, which are transported through various routes across Mindanao.
Law enforcement officials continue to encourage residents to report suspicious activities and the movement of suspected contraband to the proper authorities.
For now, the three suspects remain in police custody as authorities proceed with the necessary legal and investigative procedures concerning the confiscated cigarettes, vehicle, communication devices and other evidence recovered during the operation.
