DATU SAUDI AMPATUAN, Maguindanao del Sur — Two men were killed and another was wounded after unidentified gunmen ambushed their vehicle in Sitio Panang, Barangay Salbu, Datu Saudi Ampatuan, Maguindanao del Sur, on Thursday morning, August 20, 2026, highlighting renewed security concerns in the Bangsamoro region amid the strict implementation of the election gun ban ahead of the first BARMM Parliamentary Election.

The fatalities were identified by Police Regional Office Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (PRO BARMM) spokesperson Capt. Steffi Salanguit as Kamarudin Mangansakan Ebus, a businessman, and Mohalidin Latip Esmael, both residents of Cotabato City.
The third victim, Kenedie Abdul Adin, a laborer and also a resident of Cotabato City, sustained injuries in the attack and was brought to a medical facility for treatment. Police have yet to release further details regarding the extent of his injuries.
According to the initial police report, the victims were traveling from Datu Unsay toward Cotabato City when they were attacked by suspected riding-in-tandem gunmen. The assailants reportedly opened fire on the victims’ van-type vehicle before escaping from the area.
The motive for the attack remains unknown. Investigators are also working to establish whether the victims were deliberately targeted and what may have prompted the shooting.
Attack amid strict election gun ban
The shooting occurred at a particularly sensitive time for the Bangsamoro region, as authorities are enforcing a strict gun ban in connection with the upcoming BARMM Parliamentary Election.
The election-related firearms restriction is intended to prevent the use of guns and other deadly weapons to intimidate voters, influence political activities, or trigger violence during the election period. Law enforcement agencies have consequently intensified checkpoints, inspections and other security measures across the region.
Despite these heightened security measures, the Datu Saudi Ampatuan ambush demonstrates the continuing challenge faced by authorities in preventing armed attacks and keeping firearms off the streets.
Police are now conducting follow-up operations and gathering evidence from the crime scene as investigators work to identify the perpetrators. Authorities are expected to examine possible surveillance footage, witness accounts and other leads that could help determine the identities and movements of the suspects.
The incident also underscores the importance of sustained law enforcement operations as the Bangsamoro region moves closer to its first parliamentary election, with authorities expected to maintain heightened security against armed violence and other election-related threats.
Police have urged individuals who may have witnessed the attack or possess information about the gunmen to coordinate with authorities and assist in the investigation.
The identities of the suspects, their motive and the circumstances that led to the ambush remain under investigation. Further details are expected as the police inquiry progresses.
