SALVADOR, Lanao del Norte — A police operation to serve warrants of arrest against a highly wanted man turned deadly after the suspect allegedly opened fire at arresting officers, triggering an armed confrontation that resulted in his death in Barangay Mindalano, Salvador, Lanao del Norte, on August 17, 2026.

The incident occurred at around 10:15 a.m. in Purok 3, where joint police forces were conducting an operation against Khalid “Talib” Masaronay, identified by authorities as a Most Wanted Person and alleged leader of the Masaronay Group.

The operation involved personnel from the Regional Police Drug Enforcement Unit 10, Rapid Deployment Battalion of the PNP Special Action Force, 1005th Maneuver Company of the Regional Mobile Force Battalion 10, 2nd Provincial Mobile Force Company of Lanao del Norte, Regional Intelligence Division 10, Regional Intelligence Unit 10, Salvador Municipal Police Station, and Sapad Municipal Police Station.

Masaronay was ranked No. 7 on the wanted list and was the subject of multiple standing warrants involving serious criminal offenses. Authorities said the warrants covered seven counts of murder, one count of frustrated murder, and another murder case.

According to police intelligence, Masaronay was also allegedly involved in a range of criminal activities, including illegal drug trafficking, gun-for-hire operations, and providing financial assistance and temporary shelter to personalities allegedly linked to the Dawlah Islamiya-Maute group.

Authorities further alleged that proceeds from illegal drug activities were used to provide financial support to DI-Maute-linked personalities. Police intelligence also associated Masaronay with several shooting incidents and other serious criminal activities, although such allegations remain subject to the appropriate judicial proceedings.

The operation escalated when Masaronay allegedly fired at the arresting personnel while officers were serving the warrants.

Police said the operating team returned fire after coming under armed attack, resulting in an exchange of gunfire that left Masaronay dead.

Authorities recovered several firearms and other items from the scene following the confrontation, including a Colt M16 5.56mm rifle fitted with one magazine containing 22 rounds of ammunition and a Glock Gen 4 caliber .45 pistol with one magazine containing 12 rounds.

Additional ammunition and magazines, a black low-carry holster, and a black belt bag containing a broken tooter were also recovered.

Police also seized eight heat-sealed transparent plastic sachets containing a white crystalline substance believed to be shabu. The suspected illegal drugs reportedly weighed approximately 150 grams and had an estimated Standard Drug Price of ₱1.02 million.

Several fired cartridge cases were likewise recovered from the scene as part of the evidence gathered following the armed encounter.

The recovered firearms, ammunition, suspected illegal drugs, and other pieces of evidence were subsequently turned over to the Lanao del Norte Forensic Unit for examination and appropriate forensic processing.

PRO10 Regional Director PBGEN Christopher N. Abrahano said the operation reflects the regional police command’s continuing efforts to dismantle criminal networks and prevent illegal drugs and firearms from contributing to violence and insecurity in communities.

“We will continue to pursue wanted persons and criminal groups through lawful and intelligence-driven operations. Our priority remains the safety of our communities, while ensuring that every police action is conducted professionally and in accordance with the law,” Abrahano said.

The August 17 operation underscores the continuing challenge faced by law enforcement agencies in addressing criminal groups allegedly involved in multiple offenses, particularly those involving firearms, illegal drugs, and links to armed personalities.

With the death of Masaronay, authorities are expected to further assess the organization and network allegedly operating under his leadership, while the firearms, ammunition, and suspected shabu recovered during the operation will undergo forensic examination as part of the investigation.

Police authorities emphasized that the operation was carried out in connection with standing warrants of arrest and that the circumstances surrounding the armed confrontation would be documented and subjected to the appropriate investigative and legal processes.
