ZAMBOANGA CITY — A total of 695 master cases of undocumented foreign-brand cigarettes with an estimated value of ₱170.14 million were intercepted by the Naval Command Western Mindanao (NCWM) during a maritime operation off Parang, Sulu, on August 14, 2026.

The interdiction was carried out by the NCWM through Naval Task Force 61, which intercepted a motor launch reportedly carrying the undocumented cigarette shipment in the waters off Parang.

Authorities also seized the vessel used to transport the cigarettes, with an estimated value of ₱1.5 million. Including the contraband and the intercepted motor launch, the total estimated value of the seizure reached ₱171.64 million.

Five crew members and 19 laborers aboard the vessel were taken into custody for proper processing following the interception. Their identities and specific roles in the shipment were not provided in the initial report.

The seized cigarettes and motor launch were subsequently turned over to the appropriate authorities, including the Bureau of Customs–Port of Zamboanga, for proper disposition and the filing or pursuit of appropriate legal action.

The operation represents another significant maritime interdiction against the movement of undocumented tobacco products in Western Mindanao, where authorities continue to monitor sea routes that may be used for smuggling activities.

The NCWM said the successful operation underscores its sustained commitment to suppressing smuggling and strengthening the security of maritime borders across Western Mindanao.

The case remains subject to further investigation and appropriate proceedings by the concerned authorities. The seizure and custody of the individuals involved do not, by themselves, establish criminal liability, which must be determined through the proper legal process.
