One soldier was killed and two others were wounded after unidentified gunmen opened fire on three personnel of the Philippine Army’s 45th Infantry Battalion in Indanan, Sulu, on the morning of August 12, 2026.
The 11th Infantry “Alakdan” Division said the attack occurred at approximately 8:15 a.m. in the vicinity of Barangay Tagbak, Indanan, while the soldiers were traveling en route to the 11th Division Training School.
The soldier who died was identified as Aldrin Assud Wanson, a member of the 45th Infantry Battalion. The Army has not yet released the identities or medical conditions of the two other wounded soldiers, who were also assigned to the same battalion.
Based on the Army’s initial report, two unidentified individuals riding a motorcycle allegedly fired at the soldiers using a .45-caliber firearm before fleeing the area.
All three personnel were immediately evacuated to the Kuta Heneral Teodulfo Bautista Station Hospital for emergency medical treatment and other necessary assistance. Wanson later succumbed to his injuries, while the two other soldiers remain under medical care.
The 11th Infantry Division strongly condemned the armed attack and said security and investigative operations are continuing in coordination with law enforcement authorities to identify and locate the perpetrators.
Authorities have yet to establish the motive behind the attack, and no group has claimed responsibility as of the latest official update. Investigators are gathering evidence and seeking possible witnesses who may help determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
The Army appealed to the public to remain calm and avoid speculation while the investigation is ongoing.
It also called on residents who may have information related to the attack or the identities of the suspects to coordinate with the appropriate authorities, saying community cooperation could assist efforts to identify and apprehend those responsible.
The incident is under active investigation, and authorities are expected to release additional information as it becomes available.
