BASILAN, Philippines — Authorities intercepted a motor banca carrying an undetermined quantity of lumber without the required legal documents during a seaborne patrol operation in the municipal waters of Maluso, Basilan, on August 6, 2026.
The operation was conducted by personnel of the Basilan Maritime Police Station (MARPSTA) led by Police Major Benzar M. Mukarram, Station Chief, in coordination with personnel from the Basilan 2nd Provincial Mobile Force Company (2nd PMFC) and Regional Mobile Force Battalion 14 – Bravo Tactical Support Company (RMFB 14 – Bravo TSC).
The law enforcement teams were aboard HSTW-13 when they conducted a maritime patrol within the vicinity of the municipal waters of Langgas Island, Maluso.
While carrying out the patrol, the operating team spotted a motor banca bearing the marking “MARY.” The vessel was painted in a combination of blue, red, yellow and brown colors.
The team approached the banca and conducted a routine inspection of its occupants and cargo.
During the inspection, authorities discovered an undetermined quantity of lumber being transported aboard the vessel. The occupants, however, were reportedly unable to present the necessary legal documents authorizing the transport of the forest products.
The discovery prompted authorities to apprehend the individuals on board for an alleged violation of Presidential Decree No. 705, or the Revised Forestry Code of the Philippines, which regulates the possession, movement and transport of forest products and penalizes unauthorized activities involving timber and other forest resources.
The apprehension highlights the continuing efforts of law enforcement agencies in Basilan to curb the illegal movement of forest products, particularly through maritime routes that may be used to transport timber without the required permits and documentation.
Authorities said the operation forms part of intensified seaborne patrol and maritime law enforcement activities aimed at monitoring the movement of vessels and preventing the unauthorized transport of forest products within Basilan’s municipal waters.
The coordinated deployment of the Basilan MARPSTA, 2nd PMFC and RMFB 14 – Bravo TSC also demonstrates the increasing focus on joint operations in protecting the province’s coastal and environmental resources.
Illegal logging and the unauthorized transportation of timber remain serious environmental concerns because the movement of undocumented forest products can facilitate the continued exploitation of forests and undermine government efforts to protect remaining forest resources.
Through sustained maritime patrols, authorities aim to intercept forest products being moved through waterways before they can reach their intended destinations, while holding those responsible accountable under existing forestry laws.
The apprehended individuals and the confiscated lumber were placed under proper police custody and documentation as authorities proceed with the appropriate legal and investigative procedures.
Police reiterated that maritime patrol operations will continue as part of efforts to enforce environmental and forestry laws, prevent the illegal transport of timber, and protect the country’s forest resources.
The operation also underscores the importance of close coordination among maritime police, mobile forces and other government agencies in addressing environmental violations and other illegal activities carried out through the province’s extensive waterways.
