SUMISIP, Basilan — Fourteen illegally cut Lawaan round logs with an estimated volume of 1,320 board feet were confiscated by troops of the 32nd Infantry (DAREDEVIL) Battalion during a law enforcement support operation in Barangay Mahatalang, Sumisip, Basilan, reinforcing the Philippine Army’s intensified campaign against illegal logging and environmental crimes.
The operation was conducted at approximately 4:00 p.m. on July 30, 2026, under the leadership of Lieutenant Colonel Gerwin T. Maghuyop, Commanding Officer of the 32nd Infantry Battalion. The illegally sourced timber was discovered during the battalion’s security and law enforcement support operations in the Sampinit Complex, an area known for its forest resources.
Authorities said the confiscation forms part of the military’s continuing support for the government’s efforts to combat illegal logging, which remains one of the major threats to Basilan’s remaining forests and biodiversity.
Following the operation, the seized Lawaan logs were transported to the headquarters of the 32nd Infantry Battalion, where they were placed under proper custody for documentation, inventory, and safekeeping.
The battalion is now coordinating closely with the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO) of Sumisip and the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) Maluso to ensure the lawful disposition of the confiscated forest products in accordance with existing forestry and environmental laws.
Military officials emphasized that the successful operation reflects the growing collaboration between the Philippine Army, local government units, and environmental agencies in protecting Basilan’s natural resources from illegal exploitation.
Beyond its mandate of ensuring peace and security, the Army underscored its role in supporting environmental protection and sustainable development, particularly in forested communities vulnerable to illegal logging activities.
LTC Maghuyop reiterated the battalion’s commitment to preserving the country’s natural resources and called on the public to actively participate in protecting the environment.
“The 32nd Infantry Battalion remains steadfast in supporting the government’s efforts to eradicate illegal logging and protect our environment. Through our close coordination with our partner agencies and the active support of local communities, we will continue to safeguard our forests for the benefit of future generations. We encourage everyone to remain vigilant and report any illegal activities that threaten our natural resources,” Maghuyop said.
Illegal logging has long been a concern in several parts of Mindanao, where unauthorized timber harvesting contributes to deforestation, habitat destruction, soil erosion, and increased risks of flooding and landslides. Environmental authorities continue to urge communities to report suspicious logging activities to prevent further degradation of the region’s forests.
The 32nd Infantry (DAREDEVIL) Battalion reaffirmed that it will continue working hand in hand with government agencies, local government units, and local communities to enforce environmental laws, protect Basilan’s remaining forest resources, and promote a safer, greener, and more sustainable future for the province.
