SUMISIP, Basilan — Government security forces intensified their campaign against illegal logging in Basilan after seizing 45 pieces of illegally cut Lawaan lumber during a joint law enforcement operation in Sitio Mompol, Barangay Libug, Sumisip on Saturday, July 25.
The operation was carried out by troops of the 32nd Infantry (Daredevil) Battalion of the Philippine Army, in coordination with the Sumisip Municipal Police Station, as part of ongoing efforts to curb the illegal exploitation of forest resources and strengthen environmental protection in the province.
The operation took place at approximately 12:50 p.m., when personnel from Alpha Company of the 32nd Infantry Battalion, led by 1st Lt. Christian Jay E. Agrao, worked closely with officers from the Sumisip Municipal Police Station under the leadership of Police Capt. Jakaria Muin to conduct the law enforcement support mission.
Authorities successfully confiscated 45 pieces of illegally cut Lawaan lumber believed to have been harvested in violation of forestry and environmental laws.
Following the operation, the seized forest products were placed under the temporary custody of Alpha Company of the 32nd Infantry Battalion for proper inventory, documentation, and safekeeping while legal procedures are being undertaken.
Military and police authorities also coordinated with the Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources and Energy (MENRE) in Sumisip and the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) in Maluso to facilitate the appropriate legal and administrative actions against those responsible for the illegal logging activity.
The seizure highlights the continuing collaboration between the Armed Forces of the Philippines, the Philippine National Police, and environmental agencies in combating illegal logging, which remains a significant threat to Basilan’s forest ecosystems and biodiversity.
Lt. Col. Gerwin T. Maghuyop, Commanding Officer of the 32nd Infantry Battalion, reaffirmed the unit’s commitment to supporting government efforts to protect the environment while maintaining peace and order across Basilan.
“The 32nd Infantry Battalion remains steadfast in supporting government efforts to protect the environment and prevent the illegal exploitation of our natural resources. We encourage the public to continue reporting unlawful activities and to work closely with government authorities in preserving Basilan’s forests for future generations,” Maghuyop said.
He emphasized that safeguarding natural resources is a shared responsibility requiring strong cooperation among security forces, environmental agencies, local government units, and local communities.
The 32nd Infantry Battalion said it will continue strengthening its partnership with law enforcement agencies and environmental offices to suppress illegal logging operations, preserve Basilan’s remaining forest resources, and ensure that those violating environmental laws are held accountable.
Authorities have yet to announce whether suspects have been identified or arrested in connection with the confiscated lumber as investigations and case build-up continue.
