TAMPAKAN, South Cotabato — A heartbreaking tragedy struck the municipality of Tampakan after a two-year-old girl drowned when she accidentally fell into an irrigation canal and was swept away by strong currents before her body was recovered nearly an hour and a half later.

The victim was identified by the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) of Tampakan as Phobe Jane Abueza Sabanal, a resident of Purok Irrigation, Barangay Liberty.
According to the initial investigation, the incident occurred at around 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, when the child was left under the care of her grandmother, identified as Laura, after the victim’s mother temporarily entrusted the child to her.
Authorities said the grandmother momentarily lost sight of the toddler, who reportedly managed to wander outside the house unnoticed before accidentally falling into the nearby irrigation canal.
When the grandmother realized the child was missing, the family immediately launched a frantic search. It was later discovered that the toddler had likely been carried away by the fast-moving waters of the irrigation system.
The search ended in tragedy when rescue personnel located the child’s body at around 5:54 p.m. in a lined canal at Purok Green, Barangay Poblacion, several kilometers from where she was believed to have fallen into the water.
Personnel from the Tampakan Rescue Team immediately retrieved the victim and rushed her to Tampakan General Hospital in a desperate attempt to save her life. However, attending physicians declared the child Dead on Arrival (DOA).
The discovery of the child’s lifeless body shocked residents in Barangay Poblacion, many of whom gathered near the canal as rescue teams conducted retrieval operations.
Initial reports indicated that authorities first found an unidentified child in the canal before investigators later confirmed through the MDRRMO that the victim was the missing toddler from Barangay Liberty.
Police and local disaster officials have launched an investigation to establish the complete circumstances surrounding the incident, although initial findings point to an accidental drowning after the child fell into the irrigation canal.
Authorities are also reviewing the sequence of events leading to the tragedy while documenting the incident for official reporting.
Following the incident, local authorities reminded parents, guardians, and caregivers to exercise heightened vigilance, particularly in communities situated near irrigation canals, rivers, creeks, and other bodies of water that pose significant risks to young children.
They emphasized that even a brief moment of inattention can lead to devastating consequences, especially for toddlers who can easily wander into dangerous areas.
Officials also appealed to the public to rely only on verified information released by authorities as the investigation continues.
The tragic death of young Phobe Jane has left her family and the community mourning, while serving as another painful reminder of the dangers posed by open irrigation canals, particularly in residential areas where children frequently play.
