GODOD, Zamboanga del Norte – A long-standing land dispute turned deadly after a 52-year-old farmer was brutally killed and reportedly beheaded during a violent confrontation in Barangay Mauswagon, Godod, Zamboanga del Norte, over the weekend.

The victim died after sustaining multiple hacking wounds allegedly inflicted by a 29-year-old suspect during an altercation believed to have stemmed from a protracted conflict over land ownership and personal grievances.
According to the initial police investigation, tensions between the two parties had been simmering for a considerable period due to disagreements regarding a parcel of land. The dispute allegedly escalated on the afternoon of June 20, 2026, when the victim and the suspect encountered each other and engaged in a heated confrontation.
Authorities said the victim allegedly struck the suspect with a galvanized iron pipe, causing injuries and a concussion. In retaliation, the suspect reportedly attacked the farmer with a bolo, repeatedly hacking him until he succumbed to his injuries.
Investigators further disclosed that the attack was so severe that the victim was allegedly decapitated, resulting in his immediate death at the scene.
The gruesome incident sent shockwaves through the community, where residents described the land conflict between the two men as a long-standing source of tension.
Following the killing, the suspect voluntarily surrendered to authorities and is now under police custody. Law enforcement officers recovered the bolo believed to have been used in the attack, along with the galvanized iron pipe allegedly involved in the confrontation.
Personnel from the Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO) immediately responded to process the crime scene, gather evidence, and document the circumstances surrounding the fatal encounter.
Police investigators are now conducting a thorough probe to establish the full sequence of events, determine whether additional factors contributed to the violence, and strengthen the criminal case that will be filed against the suspect.
Authorities have yet to release the identities of the individuals involved pending the completion of formal procedures and notifications to their respective families.
The incident underscores the deadly consequences of unresolved land disputes, a recurring issue in many rural communities across the country. Local authorities have urged residents to seek legal and peaceful means of resolving property conflicts to prevent similar tragedies.
The suspect remains detained while criminal charges are being prepared against him. Meanwhile, investigators continue to gather testimonies and additional evidence as part of the ongoing investigation.
