BAYANG, Lanao del Sur — A supporter of the Dawlah Islamiya-Maute Group (DI-MG) voluntarily surrendered to government forces in Lanao del Sur as military officials continue intensified efforts to weaken violent extremist influence in vulnerable communities across Mindanao.

The surrender took place on May 26, 2026, at the Headquarters of the 64th Infantry “Knights” Battalion in Barangay Liong, Bayang, under the leadership of Battalion Commander Lieutenant Colonel Jerry B. Gaviola.

Military officials identified the surrenderer as a resident of Tubaran, Lanao del Sur. During the surrender ceremony, the individual voluntarily handed over one M16A1 rifle, signaling his decision to abandon support for extremist activities and return to peaceful civilian life.

The successful surrender was facilitated through the efforts of Major Julius Ian D. Maestrado, Battalion Executive Officer, together with Captain Melvin P. Gavia, Company Commander, who led negotiations and coordination efforts aimed at encouraging the individual to cooperate with authorities.

According to the 64IB, the surrender reflects the continuing gains of the government’s counterinsurgency and counter-violent extremism campaign in Mindanao, particularly through community-based engagement and reconciliation initiatives rather than purely armed operations.

Military officials said the development also demonstrates the growing trust between local communities and security forces, especially in conflict-affected areas where extremist groups have long attempted to recruit supporters and maintain influence.

The 64th Infantry Battalion emphasized that peacebuilding efforts remain a priority in Lanao del Sur, with soldiers continuing to work closely with local leaders, religious elders, and residents to prevent the resurgence of violent extremism.

Authorities noted that encouraging members and supporters of armed groups to peacefully surrender helps prevent further violence while opening opportunities for rehabilitation, reintegration, and livelihood assistance under government programs.

The Armed Forces of the Philippines has repeatedly urged remaining supporters of extremist organizations to abandon armed struggle and cooperate with authorities, assuring them of government support in rebuilding their lives and rejoining society peacefully.

The surrender comes amid continuing security operations across parts of Mindanao aimed at dismantling the remnants of local terrorist groups linked to extremist networks that have previously carried out attacks in the region.
