A 40-year-old security guard was arrested by police after allegedly firing a gun indiscriminately in a residential area in Ozamiz City on the night of May 17, 2026.

The suspect, identified only by the alias “Jove,” is a resident of Barangay Stimson Abordo and is currently under the custody of the Ozamiz City Police Station following the incident that alarmed residents in Purok 4, Barangay Pantaon.

According to police reports, authorities responded to a construction firm in the area after receiving a call from a concerned citizen regarding an alleged gunfire incident. Responding officers immediately proceeded to the scene where they encountered the suspect allegedly under the influence of alcohol.

Police said the security guard was found carrying a firearm tucked in his waistband during the operation.

Confiscated from the suspect were one caliber .38 revolver, five live rounds of ammunition, and one fired cartridge case believed to have been used during the incident.

Authorities have yet to determine the motive behind the alleged firing of the weapon, but the incident caused fear among nearby residents and workers in the area.

The suspect is now facing charges for violation of Republic Act No. 11926, also known as the law regulating the illegal discharge of firearms and stricter firearms control in the country.

Police authorities reiterated their warning against irresponsible gun use, especially while under the influence of alcohol, stressing that such acts endanger public safety and can lead to serious criminal liability.
