JOLO, Sulu — Authorities confiscated 14 boxes of suspected smuggled cigarettes after police officers discovered the contraband abandoned along a sidewalk during a routine patrol operation on Friday afternoon, March 13, 2026.

Personnel of the Jolo Municipal Police Station (MPS), led by PCPT Frederick C. Ledama, were conducting a preventive mobile patrol at around 3:30 p.m. in Barangay Walled City, Jolo, when they intercepted several unattended boxes of cigarettes near a business establishment in the area.

According to the police report, the officers immediately inspected the packages after noticing the suspicious items left along the sidewalk. Initial assessment indicated that the cigarettes were suspected to be smuggled, prompting authorities to secure the items and document the discovery.

The operation was carried out under the direct supervision of PLTCOL Annidul M. Sali, Chief of Police of the Jolo MPS.

Following proper documentation, the 14 boxes of cigarettes were transported to the Jolo Municipal Police Station for safekeeping and are currently under the station’s custody.

Police officials said the confiscated items will be turned over to the Bureau of Customs (BOC) for proper verification and disposition in accordance with existing laws on smuggling and illegal trade.

Authorities are now conducting further investigation to determine the source of the cigarettes and identify individuals responsible for the suspected smuggling attempt.

Smuggling of tobacco products remains a persistent concern in several parts of the country, particularly in coastal provinces, as it deprives the government of millions of pesos in tax revenues and undermines efforts to regulate the tobacco industry.

The police urged the public to remain vigilant and immediately report suspicious activities that may be linked to smuggling and other illegal operations in their communities.
