ISABELA CITY, Basilan — A small wooden boat locally known as a jungkung traveling from Zamboanga City to Jolo, Sulu capsized and was heavily damaged near the shoreline of Barangay Lukbuton early Tuesday morning, January 27, 2026, authorities confirmed.

The incident occurred shortly after 5:00 a.m. while the vessel was already approaching the coast of Isabela City. According to initial reports, there were 15 passengers on board at the time of the accident. All were successfully rescued due to the swift response of nearby residents, fishermen, and barangay officials who immediately rushed to the scene.
One passenger sustained injuries and was promptly brought to the nearest hospital for medical treatment. No fatalities were reported.
Responding authorities said the boat was nearly submerged when help arrived, preventing what could have been a far more serious maritime disaster. Rescue efforts were aided by calm coordination between local officials and civilian volunteers who assisted passengers in reaching the shore safely.
Investigators are still determining the exact cause of the capsize, though initial assessments point to strong waves or sudden changes in sea conditions as possible factors. Weather disturbances and rough seas have been affecting several parts of Mindanao in recent days.
Following the incident, authorities reiterated their call for operators of small sea vessels to strictly comply with maritime safety regulations, conduct proper inspections, and ensure seaworthiness before traveling—especially amid unpredictable weather and sea conditions.
