MALABANG, Lanao del Sur — Residents of Malabang were jolted by fear and panic after an exchange of gunfire erupted in Barangay T’buk shortly after midnight on Tuesday, with reports of injuries and a loud explosion believed to be from an M79 grenade launcher shaking nearby communities.

According to initial accounts from residents, the gunfight occurred at around 12:30 a.m. in Barangay T’buk following a confrontation between opposing armed groups. Several individuals were reportedly injured during the incident, although their identities and conditions have yet to be officially confirmed.

Moments later, a powerful explosion rocked Barangay Poblacion (Chinatown), followed by sporadic gunfire, sending residents scrambling for cover. Witnesses said the blast appeared to be from an M79 grenade launcher, intensifying fears as it echoed similar violent incidents reported in the town just days ago.

“This is a terrifying repeat of what happened recently. How long will the people be forced to live in fear?” one resident said.

Despite Malabang being home to multiple security units—including the Malabang Municipal Police Station, PNP 2nd Provincial Mobile Force Company in Barangay JAS, PNP SAF Battalion in Barangay Cabasaran, Philippine Army Brigade Command in Barangay Matalin, and the 51st Infantry Battalion Charlie Company in Barangay Baraas—residents expressed alarm over the continuing outbreaks of violence.

Community members stressed that they are not blaming the security forces but are calling for stronger, faster, and more visible actions to restore peace and order.

Concerned citizens are now urging authorities to immediately convene an emergency Municipal Peace and Order Council (MPOC) meeting involving military, police, and civilian leaders to address the worsening security situation and hear the recommendations of stakeholders.

Among the proposals raised by residents are:

  • Immediate sounding of security alarms or warnings to deter armed provocateurs during violent incidents;
  • Rapid deployment of armored units in high-risk areas to discourage armed groups and reduce risks to personnel; and
  • Swift personnel deployment to contain and neutralize threats.

“We cannot feel safe without seeing concrete actions from authorities,” another resident said. “Our dream of peace and order is being shattered by these disturbing acts of lawlessness.”

As of press time, authorities have not yet released an official statement regarding the incident, the reported injuries, and the explosion. Investigations are ongoing.

Residents are advised to remain alert, avoid areas of reported conflict, and immediately report any suspicious activity to local authorities.
