ZAMBOANGA CITY — A tense standoff in Barangay Pasonanca ended in violence Thursday after a 34-year-old man armed with two knives attacked police officers and relatives inside a residence in the Luyahan, La Union area, prompting authorities to open fire to stop the assault.

The suspect, identified by police as Guilmar “Gilmar” [surname withheld], reportedly suffering from mental health issues, went on a rampage inside his aunt’s house, blocked the staircase, and refused repeated calls to surrender.
According to the Philippine National Police (PNP), the man climbed onto the roof and later barricaded himself inside the house while wielding bladed weapons, alarming residents and forcing authorities to cordon off the area.
Police negotiators, along with Barangay Peace and Order Chairman and Zamboanga City District 2 Councilor Hon. Frederick Atilano, attempted for several minutes to calm the suspect and convince him to lay down his weapons.
“Our top priorities are ensuring the community is secure and providing humane treatment for individuals dealing with difficulties, especially those related to mental health,” Atilano said.
Despite sustained negotiation, the suspect remained aggressive and uncooperative.
Relative Stabbed, Policeman Attacked
Authorities said the suspect’s cousin, Ariel, attempted to help and tried to disarm him, but was stabbed during the struggle, sustaining a deep 7–8 centimeter wound.
Video footage circulating online shows Guilmar chasing a police officer and striking the officer’s tactical vest while brandishing the knives.
Moments later, the suspect allegedly lunged at another police officer, forcing the officer to fire his service weapon to neutralize the threat. Guilmar was hit in the posterior chest area.
Both Victims Rushed to Hospital
City Health Emergency Medical Services (CHEMS) responders were immediately dispatched and provided on-site emergency treatment before rushing both Guilmar and his cousin Ariel to the hospital.
“Two patients were treated — one with a gunshot wound to the posterior chest and another with a deep laceration,” CHEMS confirmed in a statement.
Both are currently undergoing medical treatment. Their conditions were not immediately disclosed.
Claimed He Was Being Chased
Initial assessments indicate Guilmar was experiencing a mental health episode. He reportedly told responders that someone was chasing him and trying to kill him, which he claimed was the reason he armed himself and acted defensively.
Residents in the area expressed shock over the incident, describing the scene as chaotic and frightening.
Authorities Stress Mental Health Support
Police and local officials reiterated the need for greater community awareness and access to mental health services.
“We are committed to balancing public safety with compassion,” Atilano added. “Situations like this highlight the importance of mental health intervention and community support.”
The PNP said an investigation is ongoing and assured the public that protocols were followed in responding to the life-threatening situation.
