ZAMBOANGA CITY — Residents of Barangay Manicahan were shocked and moved to tears after discovering a newborn baby abandoned in a garbage dump along the roadside on Wednesday, January 8.

The infant, believed to be only a few days old, was found stuffed inside a cardboard box and left among piles of trash. Residents were alerted by the baby’s loud cries, which prompted them to investigate the area.

“We heard a baby crying, but we never imagined it was coming from the garbage,” one resident shared. “When we opened the box, we saw a newborn. It was heartbreaking.”

The baby, identified as a male infant, was immediately rushed to the Barangay Manicahan Health Center for urgent medical attention. Health workers are currently monitoring the child’s condition to ensure his safety and well-being.

Authorities believe the baby may have been left in the area for several hours before being discovered.

The Zamboanga City Police Office has launched an investigation and is now searching for the person responsible for abandoning the child. Police are also coordinating with barangay officials and nearby residents to gather information that could lead to the identification of the infant’s parent or guardian.

“This is a clear case of child abandonment, and we are treating it very seriously,” a police official said. “We appeal to anyone who may have information to come forward.”

Under Philippine law, child abandonment is a criminal offense punishable by imprisonment. Authorities reminded the public that there are legal and humane options for parents who are unable to care for their children, including seeking help from social welfare offices and hospitals.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) is expected to take custody of the baby once medically cleared, to ensure proper care and protection.

The incident has sparked outrage and deep concern among residents, many calling it an inhumane act and urging compassion and responsibility toward children.

“No child deserves to be thrown away like garbage,” a barangay official said. “This baby was given a second chance at life because people cared.”

As the search for those responsible continues, the community is rallying to support the infant, hoping he will grow up in a safe and loving environment.
