ARAKAN, North Cotabato — Tragedy marked the first day of the New Year after a woman died from a bite inflicted by a banakon, a venomous snake, on January 1, 2026, in the town of Arakan, authorities confirmed.

The victim was identified as Jenisa Clambog Mandi, an adult resident of Barangay Binoongan, Kitaotao, Bukidnon, also known by the alias “Jessa.” Initial reports said the victim had been with her family and acquaintances celebrating the New Year shortly after midnight when the incident occurred. A few hours after the celebration, she was reportedly bitten by the snake while in a river area. Despite efforts to seek immediate help, the victim was declared dead before reaching the hospital.

The sudden death has left the victim’s family and community in deep mourning, as her life was cut short on the very first day of 2026. Residents described the incident as shocking and heartbreaking, especially as families were still in the spirit of welcoming the New Year.

Authorities have issued a strong reminder to the public to exercise extreme caution, particularly when bathing in rivers, waterfalls, or venturing into grassy areas, farms, forests, and other thickly vegetated places where venomous animals may be present. The public is urged to avoid swimming in unfamiliar waters, remain vigilant in rural areas, and seek immediate medical attention in case of snake bites, as delays can prove fatal.

Local officials reiterated that heightened awareness and precaution can save lives, especially during seasons when wildlife is more likely to emerge near human settlements.
