NEW BATAAN, DAVAO DE ORO — A surge of grief and outrage echoed across New Bataan as local officials and tribal communities demanded justice for the brutal killing of a respected forest ranger and tribal leader on Wednesday afternoon in Barangay Cogonon.

The victim, identified as Mtkdg. Jimmy Digaynon, 59, a dedicated public servant and tribal chieftain, was gunned down around 1:57 p.m. while on duty safeguarding the forests of Davao de Oro. Police said an unidentified armed man approached Digaynon and shot him multiple times in different parts of the body.

Digaynon, known for his steadfast service to both his tribe and the province, had long been at the frontline of environmental protection efforts in New Bataan.

Local Officials Condemn the Killing

New Bataan Mayor Atty. Bianca Cualing-Brua expressed deep sorrow over the death of Digaynon, whom she described as a faithful servant to his people and to nature. She vowed that the local government will exert all efforts to help the family attain justice.

Davao de Oro Governor Raul Mabanglo likewise issued a strong condemnation of the killing, calling the attack “a loss not only to his tribe but to the entire province.”

“I condemn the taking of the life of one of our Forest Rangers, Mtkdg. Jimmy Digaynon, who was gunned down while diligently fulfilling his sworn duty. It pains us to lose a friend who served his tribe and our province with unwavering dedication. There is no place for such acts here in Davao de Oro. The provincial government stands ready to assist the family in pursuing justice,” Governor Mabanglo said in a statement.

Officials Visit Crime Scene and Victim’s Family

Governor Mabanglo and Mayor Brua personally visited the crime scene before proceeding to the home of Digaynon’s family to offer their condolences. Both assured the family that the provincial and municipal governments are committed to supporting the investigation and ensuring that the perpetrators are brought to justice.
