ILIGAN CITY – In a shocking incident that underscores the devastating grip of illegal drugs, a 22-year-old man was arrested after stealing from his own mother just to sustain his drug habit.

The suspect, identified only as “Carlos,” a resident of Purok Mangga, Barangay Tubod, was brought to Police Station 4 after his mother personally sought his arrest on September 30, 2025. The mother reported that her son forcibly took her cellphone, which he later admitted to pawning in exchange for illegal drugs.

When police officers searched him, they recovered two sachets of suspected shabu hidden in his pocket. Carlos confessed that he used the money from the pawned cellphone to purchase the drugs.

Authorities condemned the incident, calling it a disturbing example of how drug dependency destroys family bonds and drives individuals to commit crimes even against their loved ones.

The suspect is now under police custody and faces charges of theft and violation of Republic Act 9165, or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.

Police appealed to the public to remain vigilant and report similar incidents, stressing that the war against illegal drugs is not just about crime prevention but also about protecting families from being torn apart by addiction.
