DAVAO OCCIDENTAL – Barangay Captain Isabelo “Jed” Masiwel Jr. of Pangaleon, Malita, was gunned down in broad daylight on Saturday afternoon, August 30, 2025, in what authorities described as a brazen attack carried out by still unidentified suspects.



The 48-year-old barangay leader was declared dead on the spot after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds when four armed men wearing bonnets ambushed him and his companion past 3:00 p.m. in Barangay Tubalan.
Witnesses said Masiwel was on his way to distribute wages to construction workers at a local elementary school when the assailants suddenly opened fire. His companion was initially shot in the leg but managed to escape and seek help from nearby residents.
The attackers immediately fled in an unknown direction following the incident. Police are now pursuing leads to establish their identities and motive.
Malita Mayor John John Joyce condemned the killing, describing Masiwel as a vital partner in promoting good governance in the municipality.
“We’ve lost an ally for good governance. Justice for Kap. Jed Masiwel of Malita, Davao Occidental,” the mayor said in a statement.
The killing has sparked outrage in the community, with residents calling for swift justice and stronger protection for local officials.
Authorities have launched a hot pursuit operation and assured the public that a thorough investigation will be conducted to hold the perpetrators accountable.
