Isabela City, Basilan | July 24, 2025 — A massive emergency response was launched after more than 180 students were affected by heat exhaustion during the Basilan National High School (BNHS) Intramurals Parade, held amid intense temperatures and prolonged sun exposure on Thursday, July 24.
The City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), in coordination with various partner agencies, immediately deployed emergency medical teams to provide on-site care and facilitate transport to nearby health facilities.
As of 9:11 PM, consolidated reports from various health institutions revealed a significant number of affected students, with many already discharged while others remain under medical observation:
Breakdown of Patient Admissions (As of 9:11 PM)
- Basilan Medical Center: 48 patients (31 discharged)
- JS Alano Hospital: 13 patients (12 admitted, 1 discharged)
- Isabela Community Hospital: 31 admitted
- RHU East: 16 outpatients
- RHU North: 35 outpatients
- RHU West: 5 patients (all discharged)
- Infante Hospital: 32 patients (9 admitted, 23 outpatient)
Initial reports earlier in the day indicated full capacity in several facilities:
- The BNHS Infirmary received 27 patients.
- Infante Hospital’s emergency room was overwhelmed after attending to 29 patients.
- RHU Tabuk also reached full capacity with five patients.
- JS Alano Hospital, IsaCom, and Basilan Medical Center collectively managed dozens more.
The CDRRMO has since reminded the public, particularly event organizers, to prioritize heat safety protocols during outdoor activities, including ensuring access to shade, hydration, and emergency services.
Authorities assured that further updates will be released as more data from partner hospitals and clinics are consolidated. In the meantime, most patients have shown signs of recovery, and no fatalities have been reported.
