PAGALUNGAN, MAGUINDANAO DEL SUR — Peace has been restored in Barangay Kilangan following renewed clashes between two rival groups, thanks to the prompt intervention of local authorities led by Mayor Datu Abdilah “Ab’s” Mamasabulod.
The conflict, which erupted early morning on July 8, 2025, reignited a long-standing rift between the groups and forced residents to flee their homes out of fear for their safety. Although the local government had previously brokered peace between the involved parties, tensions unexpectedly escalated once again for reasons yet to be determined.
Mayor Mamasabulod immediately visited the conflict site the next day, July 9, accompanied by key peace stakeholders including Malidegao of the Special Geographic Area–BARMM, Commander Arnal “Nayang” Timan of the MILF 129th Base Command, as well as representatives from the Philippine National Police (PNP), Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), traditional leaders, and the Council of Elders.
Their joint presence sent a strong signal of unity and the government’s unwavering commitment to restoring calm. Through intensive community-based dialogue and the use of traditional conflict resolution practices, the parties involved were persuaded to cease hostilities.
“We will always prioritize peace,” Mayor Mamasabulod declared during the mediation. “This victory is not only for Kilangan but for the entire municipality of Pagalungan.”
Security forces have pledged continued surveillance in Barangay Kilangan to prevent the recurrence of violence. The PNP Pagalungan and AFP units are also set to provide long-term support to sustain the gains of the peace initiative.
The swift resolution of the conflict reflects the broader peace-building agenda of the Pagalungan LGU under Mayor Mamasabulod’s leadership, which promotes dialogue, cultural sensitivity, and grassroots involvement in resolving disputes.
Residents of Kilangan have since begun returning to their homes, hopeful that lasting peace will now take root in their community.
