CITY OF KORONADAL, South Cotabato (June 5, 2025) – In celebration of World Environment Day, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Region 12 recognized outstanding individuals and organizations for their invaluable contributions to environmental protection and conservation in the Soccsksargen Region.
During the 2nd Gawad Kalikasan SOX held Thursday, DENR-12 Regional Executive Director Atty. Felix S. Alicer led the recognition of partner stakeholders who have actively supported the agency’s initiatives to safeguard the region’s natural resources.
“This event serves as a tribute to our partners who, in their own unique ways, have helped the DENR in fulfilling its mission to protect and conserve the environment,” Alicer said in his opening message.
Among the awardees were Datu Kubli M. Kusin of Sarangani, honored in the Individual Category; the Conrado & Ladislawa Alcantara Foundation, Inc. under the Private Sector Category; and the Bai Saripinang Farmers Multi-Purpose Cooperative from Sultan Kudarat, recognized in the People’s Organization Category.
Alicer underscored the importance of collective action in addressing environmental issues. “The conservation and management of our environment and natural resources is not the sole responsibility of the DENR. It must be a collective effort by all members of society,” he said.
He further acknowledged the complexity of the department’s mandate. “Our work is both critical and challenging. We are tasked with striking a balance between development and conservation—for the welfare of both present and future generations.”
The Gawad Kalikasan SOX aims to recognize and inspire environmental advocates across Region 12. It is part of DENR-12’s broader push to strengthen partnerships with civil society, empower local communities, and mobilize action in the face of pressing environmental challenges.
This year’s celebration highlighted the growing role of grassroots organizations and private sector partners in pushing forward the environmental agenda in the region.
