Isabela City, Basilan — A female employee of the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) in Basilan was shot and killed in a brazen attack inside their office in Barangay Tabuk on Monday morning, April 21.

The victim, identified as 37-year-old Czarina Mae Mustafa-Malun, a resident of Barangay Aguada in Isabela City, was fatally wounded after three armed men stormed the NCIP-9 office and opened fire on her at close range. Witnesses reported that the suspects fled the scene immediately after the shooting.

Authorities from the Isabela City Police Station and intelligence units of the Army and Philippine National Police have launched a joint investigation to identify and apprehend the perpetrators. Initial findings suggest that the attack was not politically motivated. Investigators are working closely to gather leads and ensure those responsible are swiftly brought to justice.

The tragic death of Mustafa-Malun has sent shockwaves through the local community and the Indigenous Cultural Communities she served. Known for her compassion, commitment, and deep respect for Indigenous identity and dignity, Malun tirelessly worked to promote the rights and welfare of Indigenous Peoples in Basilan. The local government also called for justice to be served without delay, to honor her life and selfless service.
