PAGADIAN CITY, Zamboanga del Sur — A police officer assigned to Camp Crame was arrested during a checkpoint operation in Pagadian City on Sunday, July 12, after authorities intercepted a vehicle carrying more than ₱1.28 million worth of suspected smuggled cigarettes, underscoring the Philippine National Police’s commitment to holding even its own personnel accountable under the law.

The operation was carried out by intelligence operatives of the Pagadian City Police Station along the National Highway in PNP COMPAC, Barangay Tiguma, following information received regarding the alleged transport of smuggled tobacco products into the area.
According to the initial police report, authorities established a checkpoint after receiving intelligence about the movement of the illegal shipment. The target vehicle was intercepted after attempting to pass through the checkpoint, prompting law enforcers to conduct an inspection.
During the search, police discovered 251 reams of New Berlin cigarettes concealed inside the vehicle. The confiscated items have an estimated market value of ₱1.285 million.
Authorities immediately coordinated with the Bureau of Customs (BOC), whose personnel assisted in the inventory, documentation, and valuation of the recovered cigarette products. The seized items have since been secured and are being processed for proper disposition in accordance with existing customs and anti-smuggling laws.
The suspect was identified only as a male PNP personnel of legal age currently assigned at Camp Crame in Quezon City. He was taken into police custody and is now undergoing appropriate legal procedures in coordination with concerned government agencies.
The arrest of an active police officer highlights the PNP’s continuing efforts to enforce the law impartially, regardless of rank or affiliation.
PNP Chief Police General Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr. stressed that accountability within the organization remains a cornerstone of maintaining public confidence in law enforcement.
“Ang tiwala ng publiko ay pinangangalagaan natin sa pamamagitan ng pagiging tapat at patas sa pagpapatupad ng batas. Walang sinuman ang dapat lumabag sa batas, lalo na ang mga inaasahang magpatupad nito,” Nartatez said.
The PNP chief emphasized that the incident demonstrates the importance of sustained internal monitoring and intensified police operations under the organization’s Enhanced Managing Police Operations (EMPO) strategy, one of the key pillars of the PNP’s Focused Agenda.
He added that the operation also aligns with the directive of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. for all government agencies to uphold professionalism, integrity, and efficient public service while ensuring accountability across the bureaucracy.
Authorities have not yet disclosed whether additional suspects are being pursued or whether the shipment is linked to a larger cigarette smuggling syndicate. Further investigation is ongoing to determine the source and intended destination of the confiscated contraband.
The PNP assured the public that the rights of the arrested officer will be respected throughout the investigation while affirming that no member of the police organization is exempt from the law.
The organization reiterated its commitment to strengthening internal accountability mechanisms and preserving public trust under its guiding principle, “Bagong PNP para sa Bagong Pilipinas: Serbisyong Mabilis, Tapat at Nararamdaman,” emphasizing that integrity and equal enforcement of the law remain fundamental to its mission.
