BONGAO, Tawi-Tawi — A critically ill crew member suffering from severe heatstroke was successfully rescued and medically evacuated from a vessel at sea through a coordinated emergency response involving the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), the Philippine Navy, and several government agencies on June 21, 2026.

According to the Coast Guard Station (CGS) Central Tawi-Tawi, authorities received a distress report from the vessel WAN YING B, requesting immediate assistance for a crew member whose condition had deteriorated due to a severe case of heatstroke while the ship was navigating the waters off Tawi-Tawi.
Recognizing the urgency of the situation, CGS Central Tawi-Tawi immediately activated a multi-agency response and coordinated with the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) of Bongao, the Lighthouse Management Service (LMS) Bongao, the Bureau of Quarantine (BOQ), Coast Guard Sub-Station (CGSS) Bongao, and the Philippine Navy to carry out a medical evacuation operation.
The Philippine Navy deployed BRP General Mariano Alvarez, which proceeded to the vessel’s location and successfully retrieved the distressed crew member. The naval vessel then transported the patient safely to Bongao Port, where emergency responders were already on standby.
Upon arrival at the port, Coast Guard personnel facilitated the immediate and safe transfer of the patient from the naval vessel to a waiting ambulance. The crew member was then rushed to Datu Halun Hospital for urgent medical attention and further treatment.
Authorities have not disclosed the identity or nationality of the patient, but officials emphasized that the swift response and seamless coordination among participating agencies played a crucial role in ensuring the successful evacuation and delivery of medical care.
The operation underscores the Philippine Coast Guard’s continuing commitment to protecting lives at sea and responding rapidly to maritime emergencies, particularly in the country’s remote and strategically important maritime regions.
It also highlighted the vital role of inter-agency cooperation in emergency situations, demonstrating how coordinated efforts among maritime, military, health, and disaster-response agencies can mean the difference between life and death for individuals facing critical medical conditions while far from shore.
The Philippine Coast Guard commended all participating units for their professionalism and prompt action, reaffirming its mission to ensure maritime safety and provide humanitarian assistance whenever needed across the nation’s waters.
