Isabela City — Fear and tension gripped residents of Barangay Lanote late Sunday night after a 60-year-old man was brutally shot dead by still unidentified assailants in what authorities believe was a targeted attack.

The victim was identified as Gilberto Francisco Toledo, popularly known in the community as “Berto,” a resident of Upper Lanote. According to initial police investigation, Toledo was riding his motorcycle along the highway in Barangay Lanote on the evening of May 10, 2026 when he was suddenly attacked by armed suspects reportedly riding a motorcycle — a method commonly associated with “riding-in-tandem” gunmen.

Witnesses said several gunshots rang out in the area before the victim lost control of his motorcycle and collapsed on the roadside. Residents rushed to check on Toledo but found him unresponsive and severely wounded. He was later declared dead on arrival.

Authorities from the Isabela City Police Station and Scene of the Crime Operatives immediately responded to the scene to secure the area and collect forensic evidence that may help identify the perpetrators.

Police investigators said the gunmen fled immediately after the attack, prompting authorities to launch a hot pursuit operation and establish checkpoints in nearby areas to track possible escape routes.

As of Monday morning, investigators were reviewing available CCTV footage and gathering statements from witnesses in an effort to determine the identity of the suspects and establish the motive behind the killing.

Authorities are currently looking into several angles, including possible personal grudges, previous disputes, or other motives that may have led to the fatal ambush.

Residents described Toledo as a hardworking and kind-hearted member of the community. Many recalled his dedication in helping maintain the cleanliness of the Sta. Teresita de Avila school grounds and chapel in Barangay Lanote.

His sudden death has left family members, neighbors, and friends in shock, with many now calling for swift justice and the immediate arrest of those responsible.

“Our team is committed to securing justice for the Toledo family. We urge anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has information regarding the suspects to cooperate with authorities,” a local police official said.

The brutal killing has also reignited public concern over riding-in-tandem attacks, a persistent security issue that continues to alarm communities in different parts of the country.

While investigators continue to piece together the circumstances surrounding the attack, one question continues to haunt residents of Barangay Lanote:

Who was behind the killing of Gilberto “Berto” Toledo — and why was he targeted?

Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and immediately report any information that could help solve the case.
