ZAMBOANGA CITY — Authorities intercepted an estimated ₱18.8 million worth of smuggled cigarettes in two separate maritime operations conducted by the Philippine Navy through the Western Mindanao Naval Command (WMNC), reinforcing efforts to curb illegal trade in the region.

In a report released Monday, the WMNC said the first operation was carried out on April 26, 2026, resulting in the interception of a motorized banca identified as M/B Dayang Janna. The vessel was found transporting 50 master cases of cigarettes without the necessary shipping and transport documents.

Personnel immediately confiscated the contraband, which was valued at ₱7,571,136.00. The crew members onboard failed to present any legal documentation to justify the shipment, prompting authorities to seize the cargo and take the individuals into custody.

A second operation on May 3, 2026 led to the apprehension of another motorized banca, identified as M/B Bas. Authorities discovered 73 master cases of assorted smuggled cigarette brands onboard, with an estimated value of ₱11,232,996.78.

Combined, the two operations resulted in the seizure of smuggled cigarettes worth ₱18,804,132.78.

The arrested crew members from both operations were brought to the Naval Station Romulo Espaldon for proper documentation and processing.

Meanwhile, the confiscated cigarettes have been turned over to the Bureau of Customs at the Port of Zamboanga for inventory and disposition. Authorities are currently preparing charges against the individuals involved, which may include violations related to smuggling and customs laws.

The Western Mindanao Naval Command emphasized that the successful interdictions underscore the Philippine Navy’s continued vigilance in securing the country’s maritime borders.

“These operations demonstrate the Philippine Navy’s firm commitment to safeguarding the country’s maritime domain and protecting the national economy from illegal activities,” the command said.

The Navy added that it will sustain intensified maritime patrols and coordination with other law enforcement agencies to combat smuggling and other illicit activities across Western Mindanao waters.
