MALIDEGAO, Special Geographic Area, BARMM — A broadcast journalist and radio DJ was shot dead on Thursday evening, May 21, 2026, in a brazen attack in Barangay Fort Pikit, Malidegao, in what authorities are now investigating as a possible work-related killing.

The victim was identified as Nestor “Teting” Micator, a well-known radio broadcaster and reporter based in Pikit. He was also serving as a member of the barangay lupon in Barangay Fort Pikit at the time of the incident.
Shot in front of barangay premises
Initial reports indicated that Micator was gunned down in front of their barangay area in Malidegao, located within the Special Geographic Area, BARMM, shortly after dusk.
Witnesses and initial police accounts suggest the attack was sudden, with the assailant or assailants fleeing the scene immediately after the shooting. The victim sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was declared dead on the spot.
Authorities have yet to release further details regarding the suspects or the weapon used in the attack.
Journalist and public servant
Micator was widely known in local media circles as a DJ and reporter for a radio station in Pikit, Cotabato. Aside from his broadcasting work, he was also actively involved in local governance as a barangay lupon member in Barangay Fort Pikit, Malidegao.
His dual role as a media practitioner and community worker has prompted investigators to consider multiple angles, including the possibility that his killing may be connected to his profession or civic duties.
Police launch investigation
The Philippine National Police (PNP) has confirmed that a full investigation is underway to determine the motive behind the killing and to identify the perpetrators.
Authorities are also looking into whether the attack was premeditated and if it bears any relation to his work as a journalist, a concern that has raised alarm among media organizations in the region.
Media community condemns killing
The killing has sparked widespread condemnation from fellow journalists, media organizations, and local institutions.
Empire Radio, where Micator previously worked, expressed deep grief over his death, describing him as a dedicated broadcaster committed to truthful reporting and public service. The station condemned what it called a “senseless act of violence” and demanded swift justice.
Former colleagues from Brigada News FM Kidapawan also remembered Micator as a cheerful and approachable volunteer broadcaster, noting his distinctive on-air voice and his positive presence both on and off the air.
Meanwhile, the 1st District Cotabato Press Corps strongly denounced the killing, calling it a direct attack on press freedom and the safety of journalists in the region. The group urged authorities to ensure a fast and impartial investigation and to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Press freedom concerns reignited
The incident has once again raised concerns about the safety of media workers in conflict-affected areas of Mindanao, where journalists often face heightened risks while covering local governance, peace and security issues, and community affairs.
Media groups emphasized that violence against journalists undermines not only press freedom but also the public’s right to information.
Call for justice
As of press time, authorities have not identified any suspects or established a clear motive. Investigators are continuing to gather testimonies and forensic evidence from the crime scene.
Family, friends, and colleagues of Micator are calling for justice, remembering him as a dedicated broadcaster, community servant, and friend whose voice was familiar to many listeners in Cotabato and nearby areas.
The PNP has assured the public that all possible leads are being pursued to resolve the case and hold those responsible accountable.
