An eight-year-old boy is currently fighting through severe pain after he was accidentally impaled by a steel rod inside their home in Barangay Bonbon, Cagayan de Oro City on Monday morning.

According to initial reports, the child had just returned from swimming at the beach and went upstairs in their house to change clothes. The family’s ground floor was reportedly still under construction at the time of the incident.

Family members were shocked after discovering the young boy lying on the lower portion of the house with a steel rod piercing the right side of his chest near the armpit area. Authorities and relatives believe the victim may have slipped and fallen from the upper floor while changing clothes, causing him to land directly onto the protruding steel reinforcement bar, locally known as “kabilya.”

The child was immediately rushed to the Northern Mindanao Medical Center for emergency medical treatment.

Doctors have yet to remove the steel rod as the victim still needs to undergo X-ray examinations and further assessment to determine the exact position of the metal object and ensure it can be safely extracted without causing more damage to vital organs.

Medical personnel continue to closely monitor the child’s condition while awaiting the results of additional examinations.

The boy’s mother, identified only as “Mercy,” said her son had just come home from swimming and was preparing to change clothes when the accident happened.

She added that the child remains in intense pain and has been struggling to stay awake due to exhaustion and trauma. Family members are reportedly continuously talking to and encouraging the boy while waiting for doctors to carry out the necessary procedures.

Authorities are also conducting an investigation to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.

The accident has raised renewed concerns over safety hazards in homes undergoing construction, especially where exposed steel bars and unfinished structures are accessible to children.

Safety Reminder

Authorities and safety advocates strongly remind parents and homeowners to secure all construction areas, particularly unfinished homes where exposed steel rods, sharp objects, elevated flooring, and unstable structures can pose deadly risks to children. Protruding steel bars should always be covered with protective caps or barriers to prevent impalement injuries during accidents or falls. Children should also be closely supervised around construction zones and elevated areas to avoid similar life-threatening incidents.
