MALAYBALAY CITY, Bukidnon — In a powerful demonstration of precision, courage, and the expanding role of women in national security, an all-female-led tactical unit of the Philippine Army successfully recovered high-powered firearms during an operation in the remote jungles of the Pantaron Complex on April 7, 2026.

The mission, carried out in Sitio Bendum, Barangay Busdi, was led by Special Forces Team 16 “MAYA,” an elite unit composed of three female officers, four enlisted personnel, and one Citizen Armed Force Geographical Unit (CAFGU) Active Auxiliary who is also a former rebel. The team operates under the leadership of Captain Cristy B. Timtim.
During the operation, the unit recovered four high-powered firearms along with one spare M16A1 barrel—equipment believed to have been part of the arsenal of local threat groups operating in the area. Military officials said the seizure is expected to significantly weaken the combat capability of these groups and reduce the likelihood of armed encounters in nearby communities.
The Pantaron Mountain Range, which straddles the boundary of Bukidnon and Agusan del Sur, is known for its dense forests, steep terrain, and long-standing security challenges. Despite these conditions, the MAYA team successfully navigated the difficult landscape, underscoring their high level of training and operational discipline.
Military authorities described the operation as not only a tactical success but also a milestone in advancing women’s participation in frontline security roles. Once largely confined to administrative functions, female soldiers are now increasingly taking on leadership positions in high-risk field operations.
Brigadier General Seigfred C. Tubalado, commander of the 403rd Infantry “Peacemaker” Brigade, lauded the team’s accomplishment, highlighting its broader significance.
He said the operation reflects the skill, resilience, and leadership of female soldiers, adding that the success of Team MAYA demonstrates how diversity strengthens military capability. Tubalado emphasized that the brigade remains committed to securing Bukidnon and sustaining peace in the region, with women playing a critical role at the forefront of these efforts.
The Philippine Army continues to intensify its campaign to dismantle armed groups and promote stability in conflict-affected areas, with operations like this reinforcing both security gains and the growing recognition of women as key actors in peacebuilding and defense.
