STA. CRUZ, Davao City — A 75-year-old traditional healer was brutally killed inside her own home in Barangay Coronon, Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur, in what authorities describe as a “heinous and senseless” attack late Thursday night, April 3.

The victim, identified by police only as “Lola Aling” or “Nanay Lina,” was a well-known manghihilot (traditional massage therapist and midwife) who had long served her community and nearby villages.
According to a report from the Sta. Cruz Municipal Police Station, the fatal stabbing occurred around 11:30 p.m. at the victim’s residence in Sitio Langan, Purok Cadena de Amor. Initial investigation revealed that the suspect, identified as Jonathan Bringgas, also known by the aliases “Malot” and “Atan,” allegedly went to the victim’s house to request a massage.
The victim’s granddaughter, identified as “Abby,” told investigators that she had briefly left the house to buy something when she encountered the suspect heading toward their home, reportedly to seek hilot services. Upon her return, she noticed that the suspect had already left the premises.
Moments later, Abby made the horrifying discovery: her grandmother lying lifeless, soaked in blood, with multiple stab wounds in the neck, arms, and side of the body.
Police said the suspect, believed to be under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident, fled immediately after the attack and remains at large as of this writing. A manhunt operation has been launched, with authorities urging the public to come forward with any information that could lead to his arrest.
“We are appealing to anyone who may have knowledge of the suspect’s whereabouts to coordinate with the nearest police station,” the Sta. Cruz Municipal Police Station said in a statement. “Justice must be served for the victim.”
Investigators are still working to determine the motive behind the killing, although initial findings suggest the attack may have stemmed from a sudden outburst of violence during what was supposed to be a routine visit.
The brutal killing has shocked residents of Barangay Coronon, where the victim was widely respected not only as a healer but as a compassionate figure who dedicated her life to helping others. Known for charging little to no fees, she assisted mothers during childbirth and provided relief to countless patients through traditional healing practices.
Community members have since expressed grief and outrage over her death, with many calling for swift justice under the rallying cry “Justice for Lola Aling.”
Local leaders and residents alike described the incident as a tragic reminder of the vulnerability of elderly citizens, especially those living alone or continuing to serve the public despite their age.
As the investigation continues, authorities assured the public that all efforts are being made to track down the suspect and ensure accountability for the crime.
