JOLO, Sulu — A United States Marine special operations unit paid a courtesy visit to the leadership of the Philippine military in Sulu on March 6, reinforcing the longstanding defense partnership between the Philippines and the United States amid continuing efforts to maintain peace and security in the province.

The Marine Special Operations Company–Philippines (MSOC-P), a unit under the United States Marine Forces Special Operations Command (MARSOC), led by Commanding Officer Maj. Benjamin T. Ryan, paid a courtesy call on Maj. Gen. Leonardo I. Peña, commander of the 11th Infantry Division (Philippine Army) and Joint Task Force Orion.
The meeting took place at Kuta Heneral Teodulfo Bautista in Jolo, Sulu, the headquarters of the Philippine Army’s 11th Infantry Division responsible for security operations in the province.
Military officials said the visit served as an avenue to further strengthen coordination and deepen the operational partnership between the US special operations unit and the Philippine military, particularly in addressing security challenges and sustaining stability in the region.
During the meeting, Ryan and Peña discussed ongoing security initiatives, areas of mutual cooperation, and joint efforts aimed at supporting local communities while reinforcing defense collaboration between the allied forces.
Peña expressed gratitude for the continuing support and engagement of MSOC-P, highlighting the critical role of strong partnerships with allied forces in maintaining security gains and ensuring the long-term stability of Sulu and nearby areas.
“The collaboration between our forces remains vital in sustaining peace and security, especially in areas that have experienced security challenges in the past,” Peña said.
The engagement also reaffirmed the shared commitment of the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the United States Armed Forces to work together in promoting peace, enhancing defense cooperation, and supporting development initiatives in conflict-affected communities.
Sulu, which was previously a stronghold of extremist groups, has seen improved security conditions in recent years following sustained military operations and close cooperation between Philippine forces and their international allies.
Military officials said continued coordination and strategic partnerships remain key to preserving these gains and ensuring lasting peace and development in the province.
